ADB help for Kiribati roads
The Manila, Philippines headquartered Asian Development Bank has approved a loan funds equivalent to US$12 million to improve Kiribati’s roading in the southern part of Tarawa Atoll. <!--more-->Tarawa is one of the most densely populated urban areas in the Pacific and many of its roads have been subjected to erosion because of king tides and cyclones.
The project will rehabilitate 27.5 kilometers of main road and 6 kilometers of feeder and access roads on the atoll. Some 42% of Kiribati’s population will be better connected to clinics, markets and other services in the administrative capital of Bairiki, says the ADB. It will also improve the road link from the seaport of Betio and the airport.
The will provide training, jobs and cash incomes for women and men to participate in basic labour-based road maintenance. It will also provide a fillip to the country’s small infrastructure private sector.
