Close on the heels of the mobile money service launched between New Zealand and Fiji as reported in Pacific Periscope a couple of weeks ago, another service has been launched in Auckland this week.

The islands region’s biggest mobile service provider Digicel Pacific, along with an Auckland based technology start-up company called KlickEx, has announced a low-cost system of transferring money from New Zealand to Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. Vodafone launched a similar service to Fiji a couple of weeks ago.

The system bypasses banks therefore making transfers considerably cheaper than money transfer services, whose eye wateringly high fees have made money transfers in the Pacific one of the costliest in the world. This has put severe pressure on remittances, which for many countries are the biggest source of income.

The service will be 60 percent cheaper than conventional money transfer services, says KlickEx.
