Die is cast in Fiji’s casino gamble
Fiji’s Tourism Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has said several foreign players have shown keen interest in setting up casinos in the country.<!--more-->The idea has been around for several decades but successive governments have met with opposition from pressure groups, most notably non-government organisations and church groups. The Bainimarama led government last year issued an expression of interest document for setting up a first ever casino in the Fiji, which has stirred interest from casino operators.
The minister has not revealed any further details, saying only that the government would formulate a regulatory framework in accordance with international best practice and would take into account the country’s socio-economic realities as also its effect on brand Fiji.
But it is surmised that possible locations may be free hold sites around Nadi in Western Fiji or the coral coast – or even an offshore one based on a vessel.
