Green, sustainability themes for Private Sector Dialogue

“Clean and Green Industries: Promoting Sustainable Businesses in the Pacific,” is the theme for this year’s Private Sector Dialogue, an annual event that is held in the margins of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ meeting. <!--more-->The 2012 meeting is being held later this month in Rarotonga, hosted by this year’s Forum chair Cook Islands.

The Dialogue will have three discussion sessions focusing on innovative approaches to a sustainable clean and green environment, sustainable finance for Pacific entrepreneurs, and sustainable workforce, touching on issues relating to resources and development.

Each session will contain a presentation from one or more Pacific island entrepreneurs or industry representative, and will highlight best practice and lessons learnt that will be used to stimulate discussion. National Private Sector Representatives will also provide their perspectives.

The meeting is expected to formulate a statement, which will be tabled by the Chair at the Leaders’ Plenary Session, providing an opportunity for leaders to discuss these issues and respond to the statement.

Dialogue sessions will include topics such as Financing Private Sector for Clean and Green initiatives, Renewable Energy Solutions – Supporting Energy Roadmaps, Public-Private Partnerships for Clean and Green Industries, Sustainable Financing for Pacific Businesses, Secure Transaction Frameworks, Improving Access to Finance and Building Business Success by Investing in People

There will also be presentations from organisations like Business Mentors NZ focusing on the strengths of the mentoring programme and the future plans for supporting sustainable businesses in the Pacific

A panel discussion will examine the current Private Sector Dialogue outcomes, including the Dialogue process taking into account the request by Forum Economic Ministers to seek the views of the Private Sector, members and development partners on ways to improve the format and operation of the Private Sector Dialogue.

This panel discussion will focus on the effectiveness of the Dialogue, including the mechanisms through which the issues that are raised with the Forum Leaders are addressed. Through an open discussion, measures to strengthen the Dialogue process to ensure sustainable outcomes that lead to workable delivery across the region are expected to be agreed to.
