PT&I attends APEC trade ministers’ meet


Pacific Islands Trade &amp; Invest (PT&amp;I) Beijing Trade Commissioner Sam Savou attended the meeting of APEC Senior Officials and Ministers Responsible for Trade held in the Chinese city of Qingdao on May 17 and 18.<!--more-->

The meeting came ahead of the first major international APEC leaders summit in China since Premier Xi Jinping assumed power, which is scheduled for November this year.

Mr Savou represented the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat at the meet. Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia who are members of the Forum are also APEC members.

In Qingdao Trade Commissioner Savou met and had brief discussions with the New Zealand Minister for Trade Tim Groser, the Australian Minster for Trade Andrew Robb and the Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Trade Robert Maru.

Mr Savou also met and had discussions with the PNG APEC Secretariat Team and facilitated discussions for PNG with members of APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) as PNG slowly develops and builds its capacity in different areas in preparation for hosting APEC in 2018.

Among key initiatives discussed at the meeting in Qingdao was a new Pacific free trade zone known as FTAAP (Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific), Mr Savou said.
