Tongan tourism operators hone marketing skills


A two-day training programme in Tonga last week put stakeholders in the tourism industry through the paces of fine-tuning their marketing skills. This capacity building activity is aimed at enhancing the marketing skills of the tourism industry including support with the latest campaign: “Tonga: the True South Pacific”, which ends in June.<!--more-->

The South Pacific Tourism Organisation under the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme (PRTCBP), a project funded by the European Union, organised the two-day training event covered by PRTCBP Project Manager Chris Cocker and E-Marketing Specialist, Pauline Benson.

The main topics covered in the workshop included an overview of marketing, marketing planning and other key components including E-Marketing. E-Marketing is a top priority for the tourism sector in terms of sustainability and a cost-effective way to promote tourism, particularly with the growth of social media.

“Capacity Building in the field of Marketing is an integral component of destination promotion and product development in the Pacific,” Mr Cocker said.

Thirty participants attended the training programme. One-on-one clinics with the industry’s private sector members gave them an opportunity to discuss and provide support to their specific marketing needs.

This is one of a number of projects in the region funded by the European Union under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF10) and part of the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme (PRTCBP).
