Upfront with Pacific Islands based Business – Auckland Chamber
As the Chief Executive of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Michael Barnett believes the personal touch is best when dealing with Pacific Islands businesses.<!--more-->
“The most important thing has been, you can’t sit here in Auckland and believe that you understand.” To understand the people and the networks you have to visit, he told <b>Pacific Periscope</b>.
The Chamber has assisted with trade missions to Samoa and Tonga and offers secretariat services to its bilateral partners through their respective New Zealand based business councils, including NZ PNG and the French NZ Business councils. The Chamber plans early visits to Samoa, Tonga and PNG this year.
Advantages to the members of Pacific Islands based chambers of commerce are that they have full access to content on the Auckland Chambers’ website. This includes access to the CRMS database and the members. An important feature is that Pacific Island based businesses can be matched with New Zealand importers and exporters through the CRMS (Customer Relationship Management System).

There is also a diagnostic tool that allows businesses to identify their strengths and weaknesses and ‘How To’ tools for cashflows, marketing plans and a range of other support. The Samoa Chamber has done training on the system and Tonga also has training planned says Mr Barnett.
But all members can also access Business Advice through its 0800 number, email through the website or calling the Chamber. This year the Chamber plans to expand its list of members, making sure its resources, services and businesses are relevant to businesses he says.
<b>Pacific Islands Trade & Invest </b>(<b>PT&I</b>) shares a strong relationship with the Auckland Chamber of Commerce through the NZ based Pacific business councils and chambers. <b>PT&I</b> and Auckland Chamber have key relationships with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and NZ Trade & Enterprise.
For <b>PT&I</b> the main contact at the Chamber is Christine Connon, who works in the International Department. As the Executive Officer for all the NZ Pacific business councils over the past 4 years and is “the face behind the email.”
Her busy role involves providing all the secretarial services to the NZ PNG Business Council, organising the annual NZ PNG Trade Missions; the NZ Pacific Business Council; NZ Tonga Business Council, NZ Samoa Trade & Investment Commission and the French NZ Chamber of Commerce who are now focusing on New Caledonia and Tahiti.
Christine organises the executive meetings, administering the minutes and Board papers, After 5 events and the annual NZPNG Business Council Trade Missions.
