As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt business as usual, the Tokyo-based Pacific Islands Centre (PIC) has joined the rest of the world in moving their meetings online.
On April 28, PIC held a meeting with the Embassy of the Republic of Fiji in Japan by using ZOOM for the first time.
This followed the State of Emergency which was declared by the Japanese Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Municipality on April 7.
Declared to counter the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of Emergency has been extended until May 31.
Tokyo residents are strongly requested to stay at home, so networking activities are mostly restricted to indirect contact such as through the internet.
Participants in the April 28 meeting included the Ambassador, the First and Second Secretaries from the Embassy, and PIC’s Director, who met to discuss a follow-up in business possibilities after the Japan Trade and Investment Mission to Fiji in late February 26.
They also discussed new projects such as fisheries, environment, and infrastructure on which Fijian Government and business groups are focusing for the Japanese private sector.
The meeting covered how Japan and Forum Island Countries (FICs) will tackle the tremendous economic damage in FICs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is in preparation for the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM) 9, scheduled to be opened in Mie Prefecture in May 2021.
Under the current circumstances surrounding FICs and Japan, PIC is considering increasing opportunities such as web meetings and seminars to further develop business opportunities between the countries.
