This year, Stanley Kalauni, Managing Director of Niue Vanilla International and his team are back at the Auckland Food Show showcasing premium grade organic vanilla products.

Niue Vanilla’s premium products attract a lot of attention, passers-by tempted along by the sweet wafting scent of vanilla, beans, pods, pastes and pure extract.

For many of the 35,000+ expected audience, the three-day Auckland Food Show, is foodie heaven.  It’s a chance to see and sample the latest food products, attend cooking demonstrations and bone up on cooking tips from some of New Zealand’s top chefs.

One of the highlights from last year’s show was Mr Kalauni being invited by celebrity chef Robert Oliver to come on stage during his cooking session at the Whirlpool Kitchen to talk about Niue Vanilla’s range of products.  It was a big opportunity to promote Niue Vanilla in front of a captive audience of foodies and truly showcase the product.

The Niue Vanilla International range includes fresh vanilla beans, pure vanilla extract and paste to vanilla powder and vanilla infused coconut oil.  The products are also beautifully packaged.  It was that overall attention to detail and added quality that captured the eye of one discerning buyer.

Niue Vanilla International agreed on a supply deal with Trade Aid CEO Geoff White during last year’s Auckland Food Show, where Niue Vanilla were one of six exhibitors at the PTI Pacific Hub.

It was a stunning achievement and a proud moment for Niue Vanilla who became the first food product from the Pacific Islands to be stocked by Trade Aid stores.  Niue Vanilla works in close association with 75 registered and certified farmers from the Niue Island Organic Farmers Association (NIOFA) using Fair Trade principles.

The green vanilla beans are sourced directly from the growers and then sun cured under strict Biogro guidelines.  Biogro are an internationally recognised organic certification agency.

Since the supply agreement was signed, during the past year NVI has supplied some of the 31 Trade Aid stores around New Zealand where the products are reported to be in good demand.

But Niue is one of the smallest Pacific Island nations with a population of just 1,600 Niuean people residing on the island.  More than 20,000 of its population lives overseas, mostly in New Zealand with a small but growing number in Australia.  It has struggled over the years in the face of catastrophic climatic events like Cyclone Heta in 2005 and at times economic uncertainty.

Although Niue’s vanilla industry is comparatively tiny relative to other well- known and long-established giants of the vanilla producing nations such as Madagascar, Mexico, Indonesia and China.  It is a testament to Niue Vanilla’s tenacity and commitment to the vanilla growers, that the industry has persevered, weathering the rise and fall of international demand and come through at a time where prices on the international market have risen once again from $100 a kg in 2015 up to $600 earlier this year. The prices are reflective of a world-wide shortage in supply after Madagascar was hit by a cyclone followed by a drought.  Growing vanilla is also highly labour intensive, the orchid must be hand pollinated only at specific times of the day.  In addition, demand has also risen from more discerning buyers demanding real, natural and organically grown products.

Attending the Auckland Food Show could lift Niue Vanilla International profile boosting its awareness amongst chefs, restaurants and capture the palates of Kiwi vanilla connoisseurs.

Niue Vanilla is a participant in the PTI NZ Pacific Path to Market programme.  Path to Market is designed to help exporters from the Pacific Islands gain a better understanding of the New Zealand market. It is an export capability programme combining a range of export facilitation services to help export ready and export capable businesses to enter New Zealand.

The programme follows a series of methodical steps to get into the New Zealand market, starting with the workshops followed by an exploratory trade mission to New Zealand to apply their learnings, trial their products and packaging and introduce exporters to potential buyers.
