Pacific beverage exporters at London’s European Expo

Pacific coffee, artesian water and beverage exporters will be attending The European Coffee, Tea and Soft Drink Expo 2019 ( ) taking place on 21 and 22 May at Olympia in Central London. It’s another great opportunity facilitated for Pacific exporters by Pacific Trade Invest Europe’s Robyn Ekstrom, Trade Promotion Adviser Europe, who is leading a small delegation of Pacific exporters to the expo.

The expo is the definitive event for the professional service of coffee, tea, soft drinks and other non-alcoholic products. The show is 100% coffee, tea and other beverages. It’s a coffee show not a café show, with a conference and demonstration programme devoted to the business of coffee.  Targeting senior corporate buyers, not just the hipsters of East London.

This event really is unique. Not a hybrid consumer/trade event but one that is 100% devoted to the business of presenting customers with the best possible range of soft beverage products.

The 2018 Show welcomed 3,129 visitors instantly becoming the prime destination for Food & Beverage professionals sourcing beverages, and the equipment required to serve them, for their catering businesses. It delivered an audience of serious buyers, the vast majority of whom exhibitors and sponsors, would not meet anywhere else, from a broad range of famous well-known major corporate caterers to artisan coffee shops and everyone in between.

Although the UK has traditionally been big on regular instant coffee, the introduction of wider products onto the market such as coffee pods, roast, ground and filtered coffee, the trend for instant coffee is gradually declining.

A report from the British Coffee Association released in April 2018 backs the trends and notes the possible impact of Brexit that could slow the upward trend.

The largest single coffee category imported into the UK was green coffee. However, supply chain arrangements from the EU primarily of roasted and soluble coffee were of greater value than the rest of the world.

Revenue from fresh coffee pods generated a turnover of £305 million in 2017, second only to regular coffee.  Standard fresh ground coffee had a turnover of £214 million in the same year. Interestingly, the total estimated turnover for the UK coffee industry in 2017 was an estimated £2.5 billion representing 7% annual growth in the 2012-2017 period.

Another interesting note from a 2018 omnibus survey of 2000 people across the UK showed the average number of cups of coffee consumed per day in the UK was 2. Multiplied average across the total UK population, it amounted to an estimated 95 million cups of coffee consumed daily. Along with a stable trend of coffee consumption in the past two years of 64% with only 12 percent suggesting they drank more than two years ago.

It’s no wonder dozens of top industry professionals have given their active support and guidance spanning the range of artisan coffee shops and cafes to pubs, hotels, leisure outlets, restaurants, forecourts, fast food, workplaces, contract caterers and the retail and travel sector.
