PNG Business Council to welcome Hon John Hayes

The New Zealand Papua New Guinea Business Council (NZPNG-BC) is inviting the business community to hear an address from Hon John Hayes, who has recently been appointed as Patron to the Council at the last Annual General Meeting.

Hon John Hayes.

John has an extensive background having represented New Zealand in the capacity of Head of Mission in Singapore, India, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

John was New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea (1989-1993) and took a very active role alongside the former New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Don McKinnon during the Bougainville conflict in the 1990s. He became involved in negotiations for setting up peace-talks by visiting leaders of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA), and of its affiliate the Bougainville Interim Government (BIG).

In recognition of his services with the Bougainville conflict, John was honoured as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Following his time in Papua New Guinea John returned to New Zealand and subsequently became a Member of Parliament representing the Wairarapa region.

John has previously led a Business Council Trade Mission to Papua New Guinea, on which he was enthusiastically received by Papua New Guineans in general, reflecting the great mana he carries in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere.

John is an accomplished speaker and will deliver an interesting address to the council. There will also be an opportunity for networking and to meet the council’s committee.
