Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) New Zealand is proud to feature Solomons Gold once again this year in July’s Auckland Food Show, New Zealand’s largest food and beverage show.
PTI NZ has had the privilege of working with the award-winning maker of the Solomons Gold range of chocolates for many years now, offering marketing and communications support. In the very early days, PTI NZ also assisted the company with the purchase of a conching machine at its Tauranga factory.
“This is our third Auckland Food show we would have partnered with PTI NZ – we also partnered with them in the chocolate and coffee show in 2017 – we like working with PTI NZ,” says Solomon Gold General Manager Glenn Yeatman.
Solomons Gold chocolate has done extremely well over the years and has successfully put Solomon Islands cacao on the global map, winning several international awards.
The company first brought in Solomon Islands cocoa from Honiara in May 2013 and initially began manufacturing and distributing cocoa nib products for New Zealand manufacturers and the catering industry.
After about a year it launched its first Solomons Gold chocolate bar in the retail market, following which it has progressively introduced a range of flavours into the New Zealand retail market.
Today, Solomons Gold chocolate bars are available in all the upmarket Farro Fresh stores in Auckland as also several New World stores such as the ones located in Remuera , Orewa and Pak n Save in Whangaparoa and Silverdale Silverdale besides Simply Fresh Auckland.
Outside Auckland they are available in other New Worlds and Pak n Saves from Wellington to Mount Maunganui. “The process is ongoing,” Mr Yeatman said.
Mr Yeatman has never let Solomons Gold rest on its laurels. In July 2017 the company won big at the ninth edition of the Academy of Chocolate Awards in London in the ‘Bean to Bar’ category winning a silver medal with its Smooth Dark 70 per cent Solomon Islands Single Origin chocolate. Last year, it won two Bronze medals at the same competition.
“I think the biggest asset we have regarding our ‘single origin’ status is that we control the whole process from our factory in Honiara to our bean to bar factory in Mount Maunganui, Tauranga,” Mr Yeatman said.
Mr Yeatman said the entire manufacturing process from bean to bar takes a gruelling 100 hours, 55 of them conching continuously.
“The most satisfying thing about making the Solomons Gold chocolate range is seeing the satisfied expression on peoples faces when they taste our chocolate – especially when they realise it’s healthy chocolate too.
“I guess for me making healthy chocolate has been a massive challenge because its a relatively new concept and one that requires a passion that is unwavering,” Mr Yeatman said.
Solomons Gold is one of nine companies displaying food and beverage products from the Pacific Islands featured at the PTI NZ’s set of booths at the Auckland Food Show in July.
The Auckland Food Show is Auckland’s biggest business-to-consumer show that connects hundreds of exhibitors with tens of thousands of food and beverage lovers. Visitors come in not only from Auckland but also from other major cities around New Zealand.
